Mountain path guided meditation

Guided meditation: Mountain path (transcript)

Take a deep breath. Breath in, breathe out…

Relax your jaw. Breath in, breathe out…

Relax your shoulders. Breath in, breathe out…

Close your eyes.

Imagine you are walking along a narrow trail on a steep mountain ridge. It falls away sharply on your left and to your right. The path is treacherous. You must concentrate on your footing and remain vigilant. You’re afraid you might fall off the path and slide into oblivion. Ahead, the crooked trail leads to a golden, sun-bathed mountain peak, far in the distance. Between you and the peak, there’s a thick, unfriendly bank of clouds, cold and threatening.

You travel this path every day. Every day, you slip on the stones and grasp anything to stop yourself from falling into the abyss. You nurse your bruised knees and struggle, really struggle, to reach that mountain peak. But when the day ends, you’re no further along.

Sometimes you wonder: What else can I do? There is no other path.

But is that true? What can you see if you are only looking down at your feet or beyond the clouds?

Look around. If you look closely, you’ll see the long, thin trails, created by spirit animals that dwell here. The trails travel downwards from the path you are on.

Where do they go? Where will they lead you?

Follow your heart. Choose a path – one that wanders along the mountainside. You will find that this path is no more treacherous than the one you left behind. It skirts under the clouds that soon obscure the mountaintop. It meanders through the scree and into a forest of pines.

They sway in the gentle wind, creaking and bending, strong and resilient. In the quiet, you hear the pounding hooves of elk, running through the forest. Then, it is quiet again.

Breathe in and out.

You hear a jay call and follow it to a clearing.

Walk to the centre of the clearing. Stretch out your arms. Fill your chest with the clean, fresh mountain air. Lean your head back and look into the sky. The clouds are gone.

Feel the sun on your face. It warms your head and shoulders, body, arms, and hands. The sun’s warmth feels like a hug.

It awakens your inner soul, that divine light within, and you begin to glow. Your divine light glows, until it envelops you with love and kindness. You are light; you are warmth; you are everything and nothing; you are perfect; you are divine.

A golden ball of light surrounds you and lifts you off the earth. You float into your light, and feel joy, love, and acceptance.

You accept who you are, in this moment.

Breathe in. Breathe out. You are loved. You are sacred.

Drift in your golden light. Rise into the sunlight. Soar to the mountaintop. Alight on the peak.

Rise into opportunity. Rise to your potential. Know you will succeed. Be, in this moment, full of grace and wonder, power and light, love and potential. You are capable of reaching your goals, whatever they are. You are powerful, just as you are.

You accept who you are, in this moment, where you stand, on this mountain peak.

Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out.

When you are ready, slowly open your eyes.
