The science of sound healing

The science of sound healing combines two powerful tools:

  • Your intention
  • Sound healing instruments, such as crystal singing bowls

Sound healing works in many ways. Mostly, it relies on two universal laws of physics: sympathetic vibration and entrainment. Research has also shown that it can improve health and wellbeing by synchronizing electrical activity in the brain’s hemispheres.

According to research, sound vibrations generate changes in the body’s autonomic, immune and endocrine systems.

Sympathetic vibration

Sympathetic vibration occurs when sound waves, transmitted from one object, match the same frequency or a harmonic frequency of another object.

For example, when you sing a single note near a piano, the undampened strings pick up the note’s vibration and play a like or harmonic note without being touched.

An increase of sound in an object due to sympathetic vibration is called resonance. For example, the body’s chakras resonate at specific sound frequencies. Crystal singing bowls match these frequencies to create sympathetic vibrations when played.

In other words, crystal singing bowls restore balance by creating sound waves of “like vibration”. They emit sound waves that match the chakras’ original or harmonic frequencies.

When the chakras “hear” a matching or harmonic frequency, they naturally “tune” or rebalance themselves to that frequency.

To sum up, crystal singing bowls emit sound waves that realign energy imbalances by using “like vibrations” to break up energy blockages and restore the body’s natural resonance.

Entrainment

The science of sound healing dictates that two vibrating bodies will soon lock into phase and vibrate together in natural harmony. A scientist discovered this law of physics in 1656, when he found that two clocks, placed side by side, gradually synchronized their ticking.

The same thing happens when the brain responds to repetitive rhythmic sounds, such as a steady drumbeat. Brainwaves will gradually synchronize to the same rhythm – a process called a frequency following response (FFR). Sound healing uses FFR to trigger the brainwave frequencies of positive well-being.

Sound healing instruments, such as crystal singing bowls, stimulate FFRs related to specific states of consciousness.

For example, exposure to theta brainwaves, which vibrate at 4 to 8 Hertz (Hz), may lead to deeply spiritual experiences, mediation, lucid dreaming, profound relaxation, and more.

Brain synchronization

Playing sound healing instruments of two different frequencies together creates a third frequency. It synchronizes the brain’s hemispheres. The Monroe Institute pioneered this technique, which contributes to better overall health.
